With the recent earthquake that shook Mexico and the three hurricanes devastating Florida, Texas, and Puerto Rico, it has been difficult to focus efforts on helping a single affected area. There are billions of dollars in infrastructure damage alone, spread across multiple states and a U.S. territory. Thankfully, there are many different support groups sending relief and lending helping hands. Sadly, with all of the destruction, people can become overwhelmed by all the relief efforts and end up doing nothing.

RCHS Spanish teacher Angelina Bower gives us all a reason examine the damage caused by Hurricane Maria, which has caused up to $40 to $85 billion dollars in insured losses, mostly in Puerto Rico. The hurricane left little untouched and caused 34 deaths. The real threat, though, lies in the aftermath of this catastrophic event.

Ms. Bower is facing the horror of the aftermath directly, as much of her family lives in Puerto Rico. She expressed her sorrow to us with the statement, “My dad’s house is okay even though his house is flooded. They have no power, very little food, no ATMs on the island therefore no way to send money. My dad told me that he is okay, but I think he is saying that to make me feel better.”

Ms. Bower added that no one in her family is injured, but she believes that more people will die after the hurricane than when it actually occurred. This fact and the uncertainty of the entire situation has made it difficult for her to deal with.

“I’m okay sometimes,” Ms. Bower said. “But some days are tougher than others,” she admitted.

Students are encouraged to donate, food, water, and diapers to Ms. Bower’s room, B120, to help out the victims of Hurricane Maria. Small donation helps more than we think, so even a small donation makes a difference.
